Divorcing a Narcissist: These 3 Studies Shed Light on Narcissism-Image

Living with a narcissist can be a nightmare, but divorcing one can be even worse. Lack of empathy, game-playing and blaming others is par for the course when dealing with a person who has narcissistic personality disorder.

Narcissist wife Knowing what to expect during the divorce proceedings can help you proceed with caution. These three studies shed some light on narcissism and the behaviors associated with it.

1. Narcissists Don’t Take Criticism Lightly

A 1998 article published in the American Psychological Association discussed two studies that explored the connection between narcissism, aggression and negative personal feedback in 540 students.

Psychologists found that the most aggressive of students were narcissists who were given a poor evaluation. These individuals were particularly aggressive towards anyone who offended them or attacked them.

When the narcissists received praise, they showed no extreme level of aggression.

The authors of the study concluded narcissists respond with aggression when their egos are threatened, and the response is interpersonally meaningful.

2. Narcissists Will Cheat to Get Their Way

A 2010 study from Ohio State University found that college students exhibiting narcissistic tendencies were more likely to cheat on assignments and exams. Because academic performance serves as an opportunity for narcissists to show off, they are motivated to go to extremes to reach their goal.

“Narcissists really want to be admired by others, and you look good in college if you’re getting good grades,” said Amy Brunell, the study’s lead author. “They also tend to feel less guilt, so they don’t mind cheating their way to the top.”

In a divorce scenario, this means narcissists may be inclined to “cheat” to get what they want.

3. Narcissists Tend to Be Social Media Addicts

A 2013 study from the University of Michigan found that narcissists spend a lot of time on social media.

“It’s about curating your own image, how you are seen, and also checking on how others respond to this image,” said Elliot Panek, a researcher involved in the study.

The study found that college students and middle-aged adults use social media in different ways to boost their egos.

In a divorce, social media posts can cause you more grief, as they’re often brought up during proceedings. On the other hand, frequent posting may prove to be an advantage if your ex says the wrong things.
